As the founder, I want to personally welcome you to Layman Lab! We’re an independent app company that makes creative utility apps for iOS and Android smartphones.
What does it mean to be independant? Well, for starters we’re self-funded, which gives us flexibility and autonomy – but it also means that our risks are our own. In other words, we don’t just have a little skin in the game, our livelihood is on the line. In fact, if you listen carefully, you can hear my life savings gurgling down the drain. 😉
All joking aside, I welcome the challenge, ambiguity, risk and (hopefully) opportunity that come with starting an independent app company. Personally, I love making things and tinkering and building stuff. I’m a serial DIY enthusiast (for better or worse – just ask my wife!) and I think working with software and apps is just an extension of what I’ve always been fascinated with – thinking up solutions to today’s little problems.
But enough about me – let’s talk about our apps!
We’re currently working on our first of (hopefully) many utility apps. It’s too early to talk details on the functionality yet, but I’m excited to leak some information as we get closer to launch. If I had to guess, we’ll probably go live in
June or July late October or early November.
So far, it’s been a fascinating process, and I’ve learned a ton. We’ve had some pivots and hiccups along the way, but I’m happy with our progress and I’m confident we’re moving in the right direction.
We spent a lot of time in the pre-development and wireframing stage making sure we really fleshed out the idea, and I think that will be evident when the final product is ready. One thing I’ve learned so far – as eager as you might be to dig into development, it is so important to take the time to scribble on a whiteboard for a few
weeks months to map out the process flow, use-cases, user-states, scenarios, pain points, etc.
The goal with all of our apps is to find the right balance between form and function, and to create apps with a clean, intuitive, beautiful interface wrapped around complex and advanced code that pushes the limits of technology. And hopefully you won’t even realize how smart the app is. Because the technology should never be left on the surface. The point is – the app just works.
That’s all for now! We hope you’ll come back and visit, drop us a message and (most importantly) check out our first app and let us know what you think! More news to come…
